Since its opening at the turn of the millennium, Tate Modern has quickly become one of the most popular visitor attractions in London, and the UK in general.

Its free admission makes it a draw to people across the capital and its excellent permanent collection is well worth a visit, even if you’re not traditionally a big fan of modern art.

First Impressions

The first thing anyone walking into Tate Modern will notice is the sheer scale of the building. It is a truly vast venue, sitting in the shell of a converted power station. This means that the main hall, where the electricity generating turbines once sat, has room for giant pieces of installation art.

Over the years, the large art pieces have ranged from a cracked floor to a giant shiny surface that children and adults were able (and encouraged to) slide across on mats.

Exhibitions & Tickets

As well as the permanent collection, Tate Modern plays host to a regular selection of rotating exhibitions, which feature some of the best known modern artists from around the world. Tickets for these events are chargeable and can be booked in advance on the Tate Modern Website.

If you will be visiting at a popular time and have your heart set on seeing one of these exhibitions, then it’s highly recommended to book in advance and ensure that you don’t miss out.

New Features

Tate Modern is also home to a new extension, which offers fabulous views over all of London’s major tourist sites and beyond. This is one of the best free views of London and is easily accessible by lift.

A small cafe bar is available on the roof terrace and more formal sit down dining facilities are available to visitors on the lower floors.

All in all, a visit to Tate Modern is an experience that you’ll remember for years to come.
