Modern humans started out as hunters and gatherers. So, what better way to connect with your inner self than by foraging?

Foraging is a great way to get outdoors, discover new places and immerse yourself in nature.

Foraging is the practice of searching for wild food, such as berries, herbs, mushrooms or edible plants.

It’s an opportunity to expand your knowledge of your local environment, get fresh air into your lungs and possibly bring something home to enrich your dinner.

If you do not live in the countryside, foraging can also be done along coastal paths, woodlands and parks.

How to get started

If this is your first time foraging, consider joining a guided walk to get started. Another option is to use a foraging app to help you safely spot what’s around you.

The best times to forage include spring and autumn, when many plants and fungi are in season. You can also look out for wild garlic, elderflower and blackberries.

Be careful to always check the safety of something before you eat or pick it. Also, don’t take more than you need. The plants need enough left to regrow – and for others to enjoy.

Foraging is a great way to slow down, build confidence, get more curious and really “be present” in what’s around you.

It’s also wonderful for kids, as it encourages a love of plants and helps them learn where food comes from.

Why not pack a small basket, bring a guidebook and spend a day exploring? You might be surprised by how much you can find just off the beaten track.
