If you have any interest in military exercises, then you will probably have heard of the legendary Fan Dance march.
This is a gruelling march over 24 kilometres (15 miles) through the tough terrain of the Brecon Beacons. It is used as a selection test to prove both physical and mental aptitude.
However, did you know that members of the public are allowed to take on the challenge? If you have a good level of fitness, then you could add the Fan Dance to your bucket list!
Are You Eligible?
Although you do need to be reasonably fit and be able to cope with uphill marches, you don’t need to be at the elite level of a soldier. And surprisingly, there is no upper age limit, but you do need to be over 18.
You don’t need any navigational skills or be expected to read a map, as there will be manned checkpoints along the way to guide you. Typically, it takes around four hours, depending on the weather conditions.
How to Prepare
Obviously, you need to be fit enough to cope with the long distance in a relatively short period of time. And do be aware that it is not a flat surface, but the mountainous terrain of the Brecon Beacons.
You will also be carrying a rucksack. In fact, if you don’t reach the halfway point in three hours, you will not be allowed to continue.
You will need appropriate clothing, and your boots are the most important. They don’t have to be military-grade; ordinary trekking boots will suffice.
If you complete the course successfully, you will be awarded the coveted Fan Dance Race cloth finisher’s patch. And be given a delicious, well-deserved hot meal! If you can take on the challenge, then add the Fan Dance to your bucket list now!
