Anybody with an interest in history will undoubtedly have touring a medieval castle pretty high on their bucket list.
This is easily achieved without even having to leave the UK! There are over 800 castles in the UK, in varying states of repair, many of them open to the public.
Once you have narrowed down your choice to England, Scotland or Wales, you can start your medieval adventure! Of course, there is nothing to stop you from going further afield, as there are many spectacular castles throughout Europe, too.
English Medieval Castles
One of the finest examples is Leeds Castle, which is not found in its namesake city, but in Kent. It has been in existence for over 900 years and has come under the ownership of seven different queens.
Highlights include an immersive cinematic experience, with stunning visual effects. If myth and folklore interest you, then Tintagel Castle is not to be missed.
It has long been associated with the legendary King Arthur, and you can even visit Merlin’s Cave!
Scottish and Welsh Castles
The towering walls of Edinburgh Castle are a mere 20-minute walk from the city, making a visit an easy and accessible option. You could spend a whole day here, but the best attractions can be seen within an hour.
These include the Lang Stairs, Mons Meg and the Stone of Destiny. If Wales is your intended destination, then head for Caernarfon Castle, which is a World Heritage UNESCO site.
During the summer months, there are many archery events that the whole family will enjoy and they really help to bring the history of the castle to life.
With so many options to tour medieval castles right on your doorstep, you really have no excuse not to tick off this activity on your bucket list!
