Iceland’s Blue Lagoon has become an incredibly popular destination for travellers looking to get away from it all, and reconnect with nature.
Despite Iceland’s reputation as one of the coldest countries on earth, the lagoon is naturally hot throughout the year and makes for a relaxing, stress-free holiday environment.
A Stinky Dream!
The one thing to be aware of before you book your trip, (and something that isn’t obvious from looking at photos of the lagoon), is that the smell is pretty strong. Volcanoes keep the inlet hot and, consequently, the odour of sulphur is definitely noticeable.
However, after about five minutes, the odds are that you’ll no longer notice it, and will be able to relax and make the most of this utterly unique environment.
Contrary to popular belief, the swimming area of the lagoon is not an ancient spa. It was formed by water runoff from the geothermal energy plant nearby in about 1976, and rapidly became a popular attraction with the locals.
Volcanic Iceland
The volcanic nature of the lagoon means that it’s an all-year-round attraction. In recent years, several businesses have begun to take advantage of the massive commercial potential of the pool as a tourist attraction; this means that it’s not quite the unspoiled paradise that it once was.
However, this has the advantage that travelling to the lagoon is now far more accessible than it once was. The proliferation of low-cost flights from airports all over the UK means that it’s now easy to pop up to Iceland for the weekend and enjoy all of the natural beauty that this spectacular country has to offer.
With a little bit of planning, a trip to Iceland and the Blue Lagoon can be the break from modern life that so many of us wish for.
