If you’re looking for a physically demanding, exhilarating challenge, rock climbing outdoors is a fantastic addition to your bucket list.

It tests your endurance, mental focus, and, of course, your physical strength. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced gym climber, taking your adventure outside offers a rewarding and thrilling experience. And you get to admire the beauty of nature!

Getting Started in Rock Climbing Outdoors

There are many taster days available, led by qualified instructors, allowing you to get a feel for the sport.

You may wish to start with scrambling, which although a gentler introduction, still requires knowing where to position your feet and how to balance correctly. Some of the best areas include Brimham Rocks in Yorkshire, Castle Ward in County Down, and The Lizard, Cornwall.

Many places offer family-friendly events too, for children as young as eight.

What to Expect in Your First Lesson

Typically, you will be taught what equipment is necessary, using it correctly, and how to safely fit a harness and tie into a rope.

All the technical gear will be provided, including the necessary helmet. Your instructor will demonstrate the basics of the safety system and give you a chance to practise tying in and belaying each other.

Finally, you get to scale the crags, using different climbing techniques.

Don’t forget to bring a set of waterproofs as the weather can change significantly over the course of a day. Check that your choice of company offers professional indemnity insurance, although you may already have cover for personal accidents through your own policies.

If you’re eager for a new adventure that combines a physical challenge with the beauty of nature, trying outdoor rock climbing is a thrilling way to push your limits and complete an unforgettable goal on your bucket list.
