If you are a fan of the hit TV series Downton Abbey, did you know that you can visit the castle in which it is set?

Definitely a worthy addition to your bucket list! Highclere Castle is located in the English countryside, near the town of Newbury, and is actually the family home of Lord and Lady Carnarvon.

As you can imagine, the tours are extremely popular and you will need to book your tickets in advance, even if you just want to walk around the gardens.

Exploring Highclere Castle

Highclere Castle is steeped in history, with a legacy dating back over 300 years. Not everywhere is open to the public, but you will have access to the State Rooms, the music room and The Egyptian Exhibition.

You will recognise several locations from the TV series, including the rooms where countless dramatic scenes unfolded.

Imagine strolling down the grand staircase recreating the iconic scene of Lady Mary on her wedding day!

The Egyptian Exhibition

Setting aside the Downton Abbey connection, Highclere Castle holds fascinating historical treasures, including an impressive Egyptian exhibition curated by the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922.

To reach the exhibition, you need to descend down what used to be the servants’ staircase deep into the castle’s cellars. Here you will find the Shrine Room, which displays an exact, beautiful replica of the iconic Death Mask of the Boy Pharaoh.

Don’t forget to visit the Coach House tea rooms after your day of exploration, for light lunches, delicious mini cakes and traditional scones. A visit to Highclere Castle offers a unique blend of history, culture, and a touch of Hollywood glamour, making it a must-see destination for fans of Downton Abbey and history enthusiasts alike.
