If you have a bucket list, why not add something ambitious, a once-in-a-lifetime occasion? Why not climb a volcano?

It’s not recommended that you seek out an active volcano for safety reasons, but there are a surprising number of other options. Admittedly, you will need to travel, and your choice of destination will also need to take into account how fit you are.

 

The Easiest Volcano Hikes

If this is your first attempt at climbing a volcano, you need to start with something not too challenging, and a guided hike is ideal. Mount Etna in Sicily is actually the highest volcano in Europe and is currently one of the most active!

An experienced guide will know of any potential hotspots, and there are multiple routes to the summit, meaning it is accessible to anybody with a reasonable level of fitness.

Staying in Europe, you could consider Mount Pico in the Azores islands. Although not one of the tallest volcanoes, it is pretty steep, and you need to be aware of changes in weather conditions. However, there is a specific path to follow with markers along the way to track your progress.

 

More Challenging Volcanoes

If you already have some experience in climbing, then some of the more iconic volcanoes, such as Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, are an option. The high altitude adds to the difficulty level, and the ascent will take approximately five days. Of course, you can’t forget Mount Fuji in Japan, but it is only accessible between July and September. Try and reach the summit at sunrise for an unforgettable experience.
