Travelling to the Galapagos Islands is undoubtedly at the top of many people’s bucket lists.
It’s an opportunity to see fabulous wildlife found nowhere else in the world. There are many thrilling things you can do, one of them being the chance to snorkel with sea lions.
Obviously, this whole experience is going to take some advance planning, and it may be easier to book a complete package with travel, accommodation and excursions.
Getting to the Galapagos Islands
The Galapagos Islands are actually located over 600 miles from the coast of Ecuador. There are no direct international flights, so you would need to head to Quito and fly from there. Another option is to take an expedition cruise, and this will be on a smaller ship to allow for travel between the islands.
The advantage of this is that your snorkelling adventure will typically be included and organised by a local guide.
Up Close and Personal With the Sea Lions
Sea lions are a common sight throughout the Galapagos Islands, so there are plenty of opportunities to snorkel with them. You might be surprised as to how big these creatures are, up to 2.5 metres in length.
But you don’t need to be intimidated; they are friendly and inquisitive and will be delighted to see you! But let them approach you first.
Of course, there are safety considerations, and you should be a competent swimmer. However, the sea lions do come close to the shore, so it is possible to snorkel in relatively shallow waters. San Cristobal island is the best place for this adventure, as the largest colony is located there. Local guides are always on hand to assist you.
Snorkelling with sea lions in the Galapagos Islands will be an experience you will never forget.
