For those who enjoy long-distance hiking, then the South West Coast Path should be on their bucket list.

Often described as the UK’s ultimate walking challenge, the route covers 630 miles of coastline. However, with some intelligent forward planning, it can be accomplished. Typically, the starting point is Minehead, finishing in Poole. Still, it can be done the other way round if this is more convenient for you.

How Long Does It Take?

It is recommended that you allow seven to eight weeks to complete the pathway, so this is not something you can do on a whim! It is best to break it down into several stages and to plan your accommodation in advance.

Don’t be tempted to just pitch a tent anywhere, as you would need permission from the landowner. You should also undoubtedly allow yourself plenty of time to visit local attractions along the way. There are lots of ideas if you refer to and look at their itineraries.

What to See on the Coastal Path

There are plenty of historical sites to be explored, including castles and forts. Nature lovers will enjoy the delights of Exmoor and Dartmoor, with the opportunity to see the native ponies. You might wish to step off the path and get into the water, where you can try surfing or sailing.

At the end of the day, you could stop off and relax with a local drink in one of the many breweries in the different counties.

If you have the necessary time, then it is possible to complete the entire South West Coast Path and cross it off your bucket list. If this isn’t an option, you can just do shorter sections, such as the North Devon route, and return to the rest of the stages later.

You are sure to enjoy your hike and come away with a great sense of accomplishment.
