Passing on knowledge and wisdom to the next generation is a very worthwhile goal and one that many people share.

Unfortunately, some people struggle to find an opportunity to do this. Thankfully, there are now many schemes that connect those with knowledge and connections to share with young people who can benefit from that experience. It just takes a little bit of research to find the right one.

Seek Out Opportunities in Schools and Workplaces

Many large companies now offer their staff the opportunity to spend time working in a local school or youth organisation sharing their experience. This can be particularly effective for those working in law, journalism or other professions, which can be difficult for those from less well-off backgrounds to access.

If you have children in school, then it can also be worth contacting the school about any experience that you can share. They should be able to identify children that would benefit from mentoring.

Find a Mentoring Charity or Scheme

The number of charities working to connect young people with mentors and inspirational speakers has also increased in recent years. Some schemes such as Speakers for Schools focus on one-off opportunities and talks. Others connect young people with mentors who then work with them for many months or years.

It’s important to be sure that you will be able to commit time long-term before signing up for one of these schemes. Consistency is very important for young people who are part of mentoring schemes.

It can be damaging if a mentor is not in it for the long haul.

That said, if you are willing to put in the effort, mentoring can be a very positive experience for both the mentor and mentee and open doors for those who would otherwise struggle to access certain jobs. Add it to your bucket list today.
