If there’s an extrovert lurking inside you, looking for the chance to get out, but you don’t want to make a scene on your own, then joining a marching band could be the perfect solution.

Marching bands are essentially mass, organised noise making sessions. You can be as loud as you want, (so long as you play your instrument well), and you and your band mates will be the centre of attention at every single performance.

A Unique Experience

While many people have a fairly set idea of what marching band music is like, there are actually several different styles to choose between. Take a look at the list, and select the one you like before you start looking for local bands.

There’s absolutely no point in wasting time and effort trying to join a marching band that doesn’t play a style of music that you enjoy!

Preparation

Secondly, before you go along for the first time, try to practice your instrument. A marching band won’t demand that you’re an instant expert in the music they play, but they will want to see some proof of your previous efforts, and general enthusiasm for what they do.

Getting a little practice in on your instrument is a great way to demonstrate that you are serious about joining the band, and give you more confidence too.

Musical Support

Of course, if you don’t already own the instrument required for your chosen marching band position, then the association can probably help you out here. Most groups will hold some instruments for beginners and new joiners, you can use these until you’re sure that you are committed enough to the band to make investing in your own drum or trumpet worth it.

Joining, and being, in a marching band is a great way to get to know people from a range of ages and backgrounds across your community. It’s also an ideal opportunity to hone your musical skills and be the centre of attention for a while.
