Time capsules are a great activity to involve the whole family.

The idea behind it is to capture a moment in time by filling a capsule with relevant, treasured items to be opened at a later date. It’s a plan that is on many people’s bucket lists, but where do you start? There are several steps to follow.

Creating a time capsule is a worthy bucket list addition and will keep your family amused for hours.

What, Where and When

Your initial task is to decide what to use as your time capsule. This is tied into the decision as to where you will be hiding it. The traditional method is to bury it in your garden, so that will require a very sturdy container that is watertight. Glass and metal are the ideal materials. But it may be easier to store it indoors, in which case, a sturdy box will be adequate. Next, select the date on when you, or future generations, are going to open it.

Precious Memories

Now for the fun part, when you and your family have to decide what to put in your time capsule. Ideally, the items should reveal what was important to you at that time. Photos are the most obvious thing to include, both current and older ones.

Other than personal objects, you could include a newspaper and perhaps write down a list of current prices for everyday items. If you have younger children, they could include a figurine that represents their favourite movie or cartoon character.

How about writing a letter to your future self, setting out your plans and dreams? One thing to avoid is technology; the format of music, for example, could have changed dramatically, and you may not be able to play your much-loved songs!
