The Plitvice Lakes is Croatia’s most popular destination and has UNESCO World Heritage status.

If you enjoy stunning natural beauty and the opportunity to spot native wildlife, this National Park should be on your bucket list. It’s a year-round destination, easily reached by bus, although extremely busy during the summer months.

Exploring the Plitvice Lakes National Park

There are two entrances to the park, one for the lower lakes, and the other for the upper lakes. Different walks of varying lengths are possible, and local maps and guides are available. The most spectacular waterfalls are better seen from the first entrance. Whereas electric boats and the shuttle bus can be found at entrance two.

Do be aware that swimming is not allowed anywhere in the Plitvice Lakes, to preserve their unspoiled beauty.

Accommodation in the Plitvice Lakes

Although it’s possible to take a day trip to Plitvice from Zadar or Zagreb, you may wish to stay nearby and spend more time exploring. There are three official hotels located by the second entrance, or you can use the camping facilities at Camp Korana, but this is a bit further away.

The Plitvice Holiday Resort offers spectacular tree houses for the more adventurous! There are plenty of options in local towns and villages, staying with friendly residents.

You may need to plan where to have your meals, as there are not many options in the area. Vegetarians and vegans may struggle as the majority of the dishes are meat-based. But don’t let this stop you from visiting this gorgeous bucket-list destination.

Whether you want to hike, stroll, explore on horseback or by boat, the Plitvice Lakes National Park is waiting!
