Exploring new places is always an adventure. Whether strolling alongside the Seine or snaking through the Alps, there are countless places to see and numerous ways to do it.

If you’re a seasoned traveller, you might be on the hunt for something different. That’s where the tandem comes in! Cycling as a pair on two wheels offers an experience like no other and one you’re sure to remember for years to come.

Tandem Basics

Riding a tandem can take a little getting used to, and it’s essential to pick the right partner if you plan to cycle long distances. The ‘captain’ sits at the front, in charge of steering, braking and changing gears. Ideally, for novices, the captain should be the larger of the couple. The rear rider or ‘stoker’ provides the power.

The beauty of tandems lies in the fact that riders of differing abilities can enjoy their journey together without having to wait for each other. They are also an excellent choice for travelling with children or people with disabilities. Another benefit is speed; tandems are much faster going downhill and across flat ground than solo bikes.

When touring a new place, the rear rider also has the advantage of being free to take photos and videos while in motion.

Where to Go?

The Netherlands is often the first nation that springs to mind when it comes to cycling. And for good reason. Safe, flat and beautiful, touring the country by bike is a must, especially for beginners. Having said that, navigating the crowded streets of Amsterdam alongside tourists, trams, and scooters may not be the best option for your first tandem escapade!

Other famous biking cities include Copenhagen, Antwerp and Bordeaux, although venturing further away from the hustle and bustle and out into the open air can add an element of peace to an otherwise exhilarating tandem adventure.
