While it’s taken much longer than many of the medium’s initial supporters expected, podcasts are finally starting to go become a major player in the media and digital worlds.
More and more people are launching their own podcasts in order to have their say on the issues of the day, tell stories, share their knowledge or just have a laugh with friends.
Fortunately, improvements in the quality and availability of audio recording technology mean that it’s now easier than ever to join the fray and launch your own podcast.
Launching a Podcast
Before you do this however, there are two major things to consider. The first of these is what you will talk about and how you will hold the interest of your audience.
While you might think the conversations you have with your friends are hilarious, to the uninitiated listener, there’s every chance they’ll sound uninteresting and rambling. Don’t be afraid to put a plan together covering what you want to discuss before you hit the record button.
It won’t kill the spontaneity like a full script would but it will keep you on track.
Sound quality
The second thing to consider is how to record in high quality. Phone microphones aren’t generally quite good enough for podcasting – so consider spending a little bit on a good quality microphone before you launch your podcast on an unsuspecting public.
Bad audio quality can quickly kill any podcast, no matter how interesting your content actually is.
Once all of these elements are in place, record your first episode and play it to a few friends to get some feedback. Once you’re comfortable, submit it to the iTunes catalogue and other relevant locations.
Be sure to do a bit of promotion so that people actually know you’ve launched and you’ll be on your way to becoming a true podcaster.
