Suppose you have happy memories of being out in the countryside flying a kite with your family. In that case, you may wonder if it’s possible to recreate that experience.

Maybe it’s on your bucket list, and you just haven’t found the time to do it. It can be surprisingly easy to build your own kite, and there are several ways to do this.

As a first step, you can watch online tutorials to explain what is involved and what equipment will be necessary.

Do It Yourself

If you would feel more of a sense of achievement building your own kite from scratch, then you only really need a few items. You can buy fancy paper to make your kite more attractive, but for your first attempt, you can simply use a newspaper.

You will also need round wooden dowels, string, masking tape and ribbons. A pencil and ruler will also be required to mark out the measurements. Don’t forget some pretty ribbons to flutter in the breeze!

If you are not confident enough in your creative skills, you may wish to purchase a kite that has everything you need complete with step by step instructions.

These are reasonably priced from hobby stores. They range from simple one string designs with a small wingspan, to something more elaborate with multiple lines and bigger dimensions.

And of course, there is nothing to stop you from customising the design with your own embellishments.

Having built your kite and crossed it off your bucket list, all you need know is a windy day! The best places to fly your kite are on a beach, or in a field or park. Check the area first to ensure there are no trees or power lines, and away you go!
