With the cost of living continuing to rise, have you considered upcycling a piece of furniture?

And, of course, once you have learned the basics, you can continue to do this regularly.

You get the personal benefits of job satisfaction and new items for your home and know you have not contributed to unnecessary waste.

Preparation is Key

The necessary tools and equipment will need to be acquired, the majority of which will focus on preparing the furniture and painting it. You will need high-quality paint brushes that won’t shed their bristles and a way of storing and cleaning them, to keep the brushes from deteriorating. The furniture will probably require sanding down or having the original paint stripped first.

The finished piece may also need to be waxed or varnished.

Use Your Imagination

You are constrained in any way; many different pieces can be upcycled to create entirely new items. And you can be as bold as you wish with your colours! Start looking around to see what you can re-purpose. For example, an old ladder propped up against a wall would make a great display area for plants. Or perhaps the drum from an old washing machine can be used as a storage piece or an outdoor plant pot.

Once you get started with upcycling, you will see potential everywhere. Try looking in charity chops or head to a car boot sale. What somebody else sees as junk on the verge of being thrown away could be a hidden treasure for you. Your bucket list activity could even turn into your own business one day!
